What exactly is “Story Mapping”?

The concept of story mapping, also known as user story mapping, was originally introduced by Jeff Patton in his 2005 pdf release “It’s All in How You Slice It” and later on “The new user story backlog is a map”. It basically consists of lining up user stories along independent dimensions. The “map” organizes user activities on the horizontal axis in a priority order scheme and on the vertical axis shows up the sophistication of the application.

After de map is organized we can finally see a sketched, yet usable, version of the product. This map Works through successive rows sending out the product with additional functionalities, this helps to avoid a failure mode of incremental delivery, in which a product could be released composed of unusable features.
